The More I Learn, the Less I Know
Growing up, I was always ‘the artistic type.’ I was the kid with a paintbrush and a sketchbook, lost in my own world. And I embraced it. Why not?
But the older I got, the more I learned that creativity isn’t confined to the artroom. It’s everywhere… literally, every thing… and is most evident to me in the natural world.
The patterns on a butterfly’s wings, the structure of a spider’s web, the movements of planets and stars are creativity at its most magnificent, and thanks in part to Star Trek, I knew that I could only truly understand it through science.
For the past few years, I’ve been exploring where I might fit in this broader creative landscape…and now, finally, I believe I have found my place.
I once majored in biology. It was a great experience until I took a logic class and fell in love. Logic led me to mathematics – who knew my brain needed this kind of a workout? – and then to linguistics, a field that has become central to much of what I do these days.
But since the early 2000s when I built my very first website, I have also been a tech enthusiast (see previous Star Trek comment). When I discovered computational linguistics, specifically Neural Language Processing (NLP), it felt like home.
So yes, I’ve known for several years now that my life’s work would eventually be in artificial intelligence, but the stars have only now aligned, allowing me to truly delve into studies and learn what I need to in this field.
I feel blessed to be actively working on my degree in Software Development (to make use of the university credits I already have).
Even more exciting to me is that I’m also working on an independent learning plan to gain credits toward a master’s degree in Machine Learning. It’s a lot to juggle, but it makes me happy.
Anyway, I’ve heard that the best way to retain knowledge is to share it—to be a creator with it rather than just a consumer of it.
I’m not sure yet how I’m going to manage it with everything going on, but I’m determined to document my learning progress here and maybe even on a social media platform or two. Let’s see.
So if you like tech and computing, are fascinated by AI, or just enjoy watching a creative struggle for their future art in science, stop by again sometime.
I’ll do my best to post something useful or entertaining here every week.
